The Solutions Engineer is the person a buyer's engineering team decides whether to believe. Everything commercial upstream of that conversation is wasted if the answer is no.
Tipped recruits SEs for SaaS and AI companies where the product is technical enough that the demo is an evaluation rather than a presentation.
When companies hire a Solutions Engineer
Two signals usually appear together: deals are stalling at technical validation, and engineers or founders are being pulled into customer calls often enough to affect the roadmap.
The first SE hire is also a structural decision. That person will define how demos are run, what a proof of concept looks like and where the line sits between pre-sales and support — so they need to be capable of building the function, not only working inside one.
The competency balance
- Technical depth
- Enough to hold an architecture, data or integration conversation without escalating.
- Commercial communication
- Translates capability into business consequence for a non-technical buyer in the same meeting.
- Discovery
- Uncovers the real constraint instead of answering the question as asked.
- Proof of concept
- Scopes evaluations with exit criteria, rather than open-ended pilots that never conclude.
- AE partnership
- Protects the deal timeline; does not disappear into interesting technical work.
Stage matters
A first SE at Series A works across the whole funnel: demos, proofs of concept, security questionnaires, documentation, sometimes onboarding. Breadth and self-direction matter more than specialisation.
By Series C the function is segmented, there is enablement and a demo environment, and the value shifts to depth in a specific vertical or technical domain.
How we assess technical credibility
We do not run a coding test. The screen is a live technical explanation: the candidate takes a real product or architecture and explains it to a technical audience, then to a commercial one, and is pushed on the boundaries of what they know.
Candidates who overstate depth are visible quickly. So are candidates who are technically strong but cannot resist answering a business question with an implementation detail.
AI products
For AI companies pre-sales carries additional weight: benchmarking, evaluation design, data governance questions and bespoke proofs of concept. We recruit across AI infrastructure, applications and agentic products, so the screen reflects how those evaluations actually run.

Common questions
- Should a Solutions Engineer come from engineering or from sales?
- Either can work. Engineers bring credibility and need to be tested on commercial instinct and comfort with ambiguity in front of a customer; sellers with technical depth bring deal awareness and need to be tested on whether their depth survives contact with a buyer's architect.
- What ratio of SEs to AEs should we plan for?
- It depends on deal complexity rather than headcount ratios. Companies with long technical evaluations often need close to one-to-one at enterprise level, while simpler products support one SE across several sellers.
