fig. 00 — what the role actually owns

A Growth Generalist — also called a Founding Growth Lead or Growth Engineer in early-stage SaaS and AI — designs and runs the demand-creation system that takes a company from founder-led traction to a repeatable go-to-market engine.

This is not a quota-carrying closing role. Sales owns the cycle; growth owns what fills it. In technical markets, that often includes category creation: explaining a new problem and product in language buyers understand and trust.

01DEMAND ARCHITECTURE

What the role owns

A Growth Generalist owns the demand-creation system — ICP, messaging, outbound, content, partnerships and the tooling behind them — and is judged on the pipeline it produces.

Demand engine
Defines ICPs and personas, then builds multi-channel outbound across email, LinkedIn, calling, social, ABM and events.
Messaging and positioning
Turns a complex product into clear commercial value across website copy, sales collateral, category narrative and launch messaging.
Content and category
Turns founder expertise into LinkedIn content, webinars, white papers and points of view that create market pull.
Partnerships and systems
Opens early partner motions and owns the CRM, data, tooling, automation and handoff behind demand creation.
Pipeline numbers
Owns pipeline value and volume, cost per opportunity, conversion by segment and the weekly kill-or-scale decisions.

02ROLE CALIBRATION

Growth Generalist vs Growth Engineer

A Growth Engineer is the systems-heavy version of the role; a Growth Generalist is the broader founding builder. Neither carries a closing quota.

TitleWhat it usually means
Growth EngineerThe systems-heavy version: data workflows, enrichment, automation, tooling and experiments. Usually still accountable for demand, not internal infrastructure alone.
Growth GeneralistThe broad founding builder: positioning, outbound, content, partnerships and experiments before the company can justify specialist teams.
Growth MarketerUsually channel-led: paid, SEO, lifecycle and campaigns inside Marketing. More specialist than the founding generalist brief.
Founding AEOwns discovery, the sales cycle and closed-won quota. Growth creates and shapes demand; the AE converts it.

03OPERATING MODEL

Where the role sits and how it is measured

Early on the role reports to the Founder or CEO and is measured on pipeline generated, cost per opportunity and experiment velocity — not closed-won quota.

At Seed to Series A, the role usually reports to the Founder or CEO and works alongside founding AEs, SDR support and product. It is building the function, not sitting three layers down in a mature marketing organisation.

Primary measures
Pipeline generated, cost per opportunity, channel and segment performance, and reply-to-meeting-to-opportunity conversion.
Operating measure
Experiment velocity: what was tested, what the market said, and what was killed, changed or scaled.
Not the measure
Personal closed-won quota or vanity MQL volume without pipeline quality.

05DECISION ENGINE

The hiring decision

Hire one when founder-led demand shows real signal but is not yet repeatable, and you need a builder rather than another channel specialist.

Hire one when founder-led demand has real signal but is not repeatable, the category still needs explaining and you need a builder rather than another channel specialist.

We assess the evidence behind the outcome: the audience, message, channel, tooling and output; what the candidate personally built; and what changed when the first signal came back. If demand has not been proved manually, the next step may still be founder-led selling. If the work is mainly process, brand or prospecting volume, the right hire may be RevOps, Marketing or an SDR instead.

Common questions

What is a Growth Engineer?
A Growth Engineer is a hybrid commercial and technical operator who builds growth systems: outbound workflows, data enrichment, automations, experiments and measurement. The output is demand and pipeline rather than internal tooling alone.
What is a Growth Generalist?
A Growth Generalist is an early-stage hire who covers several demand-creation jobs before the company has a full marketing team: outbound, positioning, founder content, partnerships, events, testing and reporting.
Should we hire a Growth Engineer or a GTM Engineer?
A GTM Engineer is usually deeper on systems, data and automation under the revenue motion. A Growth Engineer or Growth Generalist is broader, often owning messaging, content, channel experiments and demand creation as well as the systems behind them.
When should a startup hire a Growth Generalist?
Usually once founder-led demand has enough signal to scale, but before the company is ready for a fully specialised marketing function. The hire must be able to build, write, test and measure without waiting for a mature team around them.
Who does a Growth Generalist report to?
In Seed to Series A SaaS and AI companies, a Growth Generalist usually reports to the Founder or CEO. As the company scales, the role can develop into Head of Growth or VP Growth under the CEO or CRO.
Do Growth Generalists need to code?
Not usually as software engineers. They do need to be fluent with modern GTM and AI tooling, automation, data and the systems behind outbound and experimentation.
