Post-Sales

Post-Sales recruitment: Customer Success and Account Management

Adoption, value, retention, expansion. Post-sales is a revenue function, not a happiness function.

Search for the people who own the revenue after the first signature — adoption, retention, renewal and expansion.

The revenue lifecycle after signature

Select a phase — conceptual, not a universal operating model

Implementation, data, integration and the first working use case. Slow onboarding shows up as a renewal problem twelve months later, not as a support ticket now.

Where the work usually sits

Customer Success

Account Management

Few companies divide these responsibilities identically. Establishing who owns renewal and who owns expansion changes the profile more than the job title does.

In a subscription business the second year decides the economics. Post-sales is a revenue function, and companies that staff it as a support function tend to find that out late.

Tipped recruits customer success and account management for venture-backed SaaS and AI companies, including the first post-sales hire — the one who has to build the function while carrying the accounts.

Two related but distinct hires

Customer Success
Adoption, health, onboarding and renewal. Success is measured in whether customers get value and stay.
Account Management
Commercial ownership of the base: renewals negotiated, expansion sold, growth planned account by account.

What the intake settles first

Who owns the renewal number, who owns expansion, and whether the post-sales hire is expected to sell. Those three answers change the profile more than the job title does.

We also establish the technical load: an AI product where customers need evaluation support, data work and workflow change requires a materially different person than a self-serve tool with a short time to value.

Building the function, not just filling a seat

First post-sales hires inherit no playbook: no health scoring, no segmentation, no renewal process. We screen for people who have built those things once already, or who can show clear evidence of creating structure where none existed.

For Unitary AI we made five placements in five months while commercial functions were being established, which is the pattern this work usually takes — several related hires as a team forms rather than one isolated role.

Common questions

Should a first post-sales hire be a CSM or an Account Manager?
It depends on where the revenue risk sits. If churn is driven by customers failing to adopt, hire customer success. If the base is healthy but renewals and expansion are unmanaged and commercially significant, account management is the stronger first hire.
Do you recruit post-sales leadership?
Yes. Director and VP Customer Success appointments run through our Leadership Search practice, with individual-contributor hires handled here.
