Forward Deployed Engineers became a mainstream AI-company hire because the products need work to land. The model is capable, the customer workflow is messy, and someone has to sit inside the account and make the two meet.
It is a genuinely rare profile: engineering capability, customer tolerance and commercial judgement in the same person. Searching for it as a normal engineering hire produces engineers who resent the customer, and searching for it as a pre-sales hire produces sellers who cannot build.
What the role covers
- Scoping
- Turning a vague customer ambition into a deployment that can be shipped and measured.
- Building in the account
- Writing real code — integrations, pipelines, evaluations, prompts and glue — against the customer's data.
- Deployment and adoption
- Getting the thing into production use, not into a successful demo.
- Feeding product
- Returning what was built repeatedly as a signal of what belongs in the core product.
- Commercial consequence
- Frequently tied to expansion or renewal, because failed deployments do not renew.
FDE, Solutions Engineer or Solutions Architect?
- Forward Deployed Engineer
- Post-sale or blended. Builds inside the customer environment and owns whether the deployment works.
- Solutions Engineer
- Pre-sale. Owns technical validation of the deal: demo, proof of concept, security and architecture questions.
- Solutions Architect
- Design authority across accounts, usually with less hands-on implementation.
Where the candidates come from
In practice, three pools: software and data engineers who want customer contact and product influence; solutions engineers who have kept genuine build skills; and consultants from technical delivery backgrounds who have shipped inside client environments.
The failure mode differs by pool. Engineers can struggle with ambiguity and stakeholder management. Solutions engineers can drift toward demo work. Consultants can optimise for the deliverable rather than production adoption. We test for the specific failure mode of the pool a candidate comes from.
How we assess
Candidates walk through a deployment they personally shipped: what the customer wanted, what they discovered was actually true, what they built, what broke, and what the account did next. Every claim is examined for whether they built it or watched it.
We then test product comprehension against your product, because an FDE is the person the customer's engineers will believe or dismiss in the first fifteen minutes.
Stage and structure
At Seed and Series A the FDE is often the first technical customer-facing hire, working alongside a founder and covering pre-sales validation as well as deployment.
From Series B the role usually splits: solutions engineering owns the deal, forward deployed engineering owns the outcome. Deciding which structure you are hiring into changes the shortlist entirely.
The offer
A free 30-minute consultation with the founder — then a 10-day sprint you only pay for if you hire.
I built and scaled these teams myself. I made the hiring mistakes — that’s why I started Tipped.

Common questions
- What is a forward deployed engineer?
- A forward deployed engineer is an engineer who works inside a customer's environment to scope, build and deploy a product into real production use. They write code against the customer's data and workflows and are typically accountable for whether the deployment succeeds commercially, not just technically.
- What is the difference between a forward deployed engineer and a solutions engineer?
- A solutions engineer sits pre-sale and owns technical validation of the deal — demos, proofs of concept, security and architecture. A forward deployed engineer sits at or after the sale and owns building and landing the deployment inside the account. Early-stage companies often hire one person to do both, then split the roles from Series B.
- Do forward deployed engineers need to be strong software engineers?
- Yes. The role fails without genuine build capability — customers can tell within one session. What varies is depth of specialism: most FDE searches favour breadth, pragmatism and speed over deep systems specialism.
- How do you find forward deployed engineers?
- The pool is small and largely passive, so these are search-led rather than advert-led hires. We map engineers with customer-facing delivery history, technically credible solutions engineers and technical consultants, then screen all three against your product and deployment reality.
